What Our Fairfax, VA Dental Patients Are Saying
The Hidden Link Between TMD and Disrupted Sleep
TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) can be closely tied to your sleep quality. An underdeveloped or misaligned jaw can obstruct breathing and disrupt sleep. This can be a root cause behind conditions like snoring, sleep apnea, and chronic fatigue.
These interconnected problems become a vicious cycle impacting your sleep, pain, inflammation, and health. By treating TMD and sleep apnea together, we can resolve symptoms and improve your sleep, energy, pain levels, and quality of life.

A Simple 3-Step Process
The Screening Process
First, our team performs a comprehensive head and neck evaluation and takes special X-rays using our CBCT scanner. We’ll also run through your heath history and perform other tests to evaluate your muscle function.
A Multidisciplinary Approach
We prioritize open communication with other health professionals such as ENTs (Ear, Nose and Throat doctors), sleep physicians, neurologists, rheumatologists, and chiropractors to alleviate your pain and address your overall health and wellness issues.
Customized Treatment Plan
An initial conservative splint therapy may be recommended, alongside other adjunct therapies, to decrease muscle tension and pain. However, a long-term custom plan will be presented and can involve orthopedic appliances to expand arches and realign the jaws, orthodontic treatment, airway/obstructive sleep apnea management, restorations (such as crowns and bridges) for severely worn dentition, or myofunctional therapy.
Did you know…
Up to 70% of TMD patients also struggle with related sleep disturbances or chronic headaches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Check out these frequently asked questions, or call us to speak with our team.
Are there TMD self care strategies?
Yes, there are several strategies you can apply at home to help make your TMD pain more manageable.
- Apply ice for severe, acute pain
- Apply moist heat for dull chronic pain
- Adopt a soft food diet
- Adjust to an adequate posture and sleep position
- Try anti-inflammatory medications
What types of TMD therapies are available?
Various therapeutic modalities can effectively treat TMD and relieve related pain and dysfunction.
- Stabilizing oral appliances custom made and specific to the type of disorder
- Physical therapy, including jaw exercises, that are simple and effective enough to treat early stages of the disorder
- Counseling to help patients understand the factors and behaviors that may aggravate their pain
- Orthodontic treatment
Will I need surgery to treat my TMD?
Surgery should only be considered if the reversible therapies fail. Surgical procedures to treat TMD range from minimally invasive (irrigating the joint and removing debris) to repairing or replacing the joint. There is no single cause for jaw problems and patients cannot all be treated using the same protocol. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the origin of the pain and make a proper diagnosis before treatment is initiated. Although not life threatening, if the TMJ disorder is left untreated, it can lead to severe chronic pain and development of diseases such as anxiety and depression.
Is there a link between TMD and OSA?
TMD can be closely tied to your sleep quality. Poor sleep from conditions like sleep apnea deprives your body of enough sleep and oxygen. This will cause sleep bruxism (grinding) leading to jaw pain and teeth wear.
On the other hand, retruded and misaligned Jaws can put strain on your jaw joint (TMJ) and cause airway restriction. This will make you more prone to snoring and disrupted breathing. These interconnected problems become a vicious cycle impacting your sleep, pain, inflammation and overall health.
